Greenwich Village

Rosemary's Baby

Greenwich Village serves as both the setting and filming location for Guy Woodhouse’s proposed television series, linking his career opportunity to a place Rosemary visits during her pregnancy. The novel gives it a focused role: it is where Guy’s pilot takes shape and where Rosemary briefly observes that work at close range.

Setting and Role in the Pilot

Guy tells Rosemary that he will make a pilot for a half-hour comedy series called Greenwich Village. Rehearsals have been postponed until January because the production has not found a little girl to cast, but Guy says he will work on the pilot the following month. He describes his character as a way-out writer and says the part is practically the lead. The series is to be filmed in Greenwich Village, making the place part of the project’s premise as well as its production setting.

Filming on Sullivan Street

Rosemary goes to Greenwich Village to watch some of the pilot’s outdoor filming. Between takes, she sees Guy running down Sullivan Street with a stolen hot-dog wagon. The brief glimpse makes his new work concrete: the opportunity he has described at home is now unfolding as a street scene, with Guy performing in the role he has just told her about.

Place in Rosemary’s Routine

The visit falls within a stretch Rosemary experiences as orderly and bright. Alongside getting a haircut, finishing dental treatment, and voting on Election Day, she watches Guy’s shoot and spends time talking to small children and smiling at pregnant women. Greenwich Village therefore enters the account not as a detailed portrait of the neighborhood, but as the setting for a specific episode in the couple’s changing circumstances: Guy’s professional prospects are rising, while Rosemary’s ordinary outings increasingly take place in the context of pregnancy.
